Internal and External Repairs to Storm Tank

Problem

The steel tank sidewalls were badly corroded in about 10 positions immediately above the concrete base and were allowing storm water to leak from the tank. The internal flexible joint was compromised.

Solution - Internal Repair

  • Drain the tank and jet wash
  • Remove the compromised seal from the base joint
  • Shotblast the concrete and the steel tank wall approximately 200mm either side of the joint line.
  • Apply the relevant surface conditioners to the blasted steel and to the concrete.
  • Brush apply the first coat of Belzona flexible membrane together with a reinforcing sheet and allow to cure.
  • The following day apply a second coat of the flexible membrane.

Solution - External Repair

  • Identify the problem areas
  • Blast clean the corroded area to provide a suitable key for Belzona
  • Apply the chemical and corrosion resistant Belzona Super Metal to the prepared area and bond the rolled steel repair plates into position to seal any holes and regain the tanks integrity.
  • Apply the external protective coat over the repair patch.

Summary

  • This work was all completed on schedule and on budget.
  • The integrity of the tank has been reinstated and has greatly increased the useful asset life.
